Why would a Catalytic Converter Not Function Properly?

A catalytic converter that is not functioning properly can be the result of the converter being clogged or poisoned. For a clogged converter, there is really no "inspection port" to see an actual clog in the converter. The only real way to tell if it is clogged is to remove it and check the change in the engines performance. Another factor that can reduce the performance of your converter is not recieving the proper mix of exhaust gases or the over-use of certain fuel additives can also reduce the performance of your catalytic converter. Other signs to be aware of is that you do not go faster when you the push the gas pedal or that you will notice a considerable drop in gas mileage.

Common Signs To Catalytic Converter Breakdown:

• Broken or Melted Substrate is caused by the fuel mixture being too rich or raw fuel and/or entering exhaust system.
  • Examine: Ignition System – Plugs and Wires, Check or Diverter Valves, Oxygen or Coolant Sensor.
• Shell Deeply Discolored due to the fuel mixture being too rich.
  
  • Examine: Excessive Oil Exhaust – Air Pump, Check and Diverter Valves.
• Clogged Substrate or Carbon Deposits are caused by the fuel mixture being too rich or oil or anti-freeze entering exhaust system.
  
  • Examine: Piston Rings – Warped or Cracked Cylinder Head – Valve Seals
